Rick Stein’s current series “Long Weekends†on BBC2 featured Vienna
A Happy New Year.
Rick Stein’s current series “Long Weekends†on BBC2 featured Vienna. There are not many capitals that can boast of having vineyards within the city boundaries. Vienna has over 600 hectares, and white grapes dominate these vineyards. Grüner Veltliner, the quintessential Austrian grape, is common, along with Riesling and Chardonnay. Gemischter Satz is the result of planting different grape varieties together in one vineyard – a unique style profile has been developed, a style that reflects the vine’s origin-typical aromas and flavours.
During his trip Rick visited one of the Viennese vintners and tried his Gemischter Satz, which he thoroughly enjoyed.
The production of Gemischter Satz is not limited to Viennese vineyards, but in several other wine growing regions.
The Austrian Wein Company has been importing Gemischter Satz from Georg Schneider’s vineyard in Tattendorf, Niederösterreich, south of Vienna, for several years.
